Since it was first established, the unit takes care of all types of trauma (cranial, thoracic, abdominal and extremity), burns, acute peripheral vascular diseases, and acute abdominal cases. Thus, Trauma & Emergency Service of Istanbul medical School serves all these groups of patients and educates it’s students, residents and fellows on this field. The unit can take care of emergency laparotomy, thoracotomy, peripheral vascular repair, acute peripheral arterial occlusions, acute ruptures of aortic aneurysms, burns cases and drainage of intracranial hematomas which are handled by the Neurosurgery Department.

It is a referral center for patients with sepsis, SIRS and accompanying risk factors that should be followed-up in an surgical intensive care unit. For all these reasons, our unit can take care of all needs of the admitted patients in one building and offers it's residents knowledge in acute abdomen, trauma, burns, SIRS, sepsis, cytokines and surgical intensive care besides classical surgical practice. Since it was first established, the unit treated thousands of patients with the ever increasing technological resources.
